Stroke Center

Patients can access the latest Stroke treatment, close to home.

A stroke can change your life in an instant, especially if you don’t respond quickly to receive life-saving care. From the moment you have stroke symptoms, your brains cells are not receiving the oxygen-carrying blood they need to function. This can cause damage to the affected areas of the brain – possibly resulting in disabilities such as trouble moving, speaking or thinking. The longer brain cells are deprived of blood and oxygen, the greater chance of damage to the brain. Stroke is the nation’s fourth leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today. Thankfully, expert stroke care is available at Platte Valley Medical Center.

PVMC’s Certified Primary Stroke Center:

  • Specialized stroke care by a team of stroke specialists that includes Neurologist and Stroke Director Rai Kakkar, M.D. His knowledge and expertise pairs nicely with the operational support of PVMC’s stroke team, which includes Stroke Coordinators, ICU Director, ICU, Emergency and Medical Imaging Staff, EMS Responders, Hospitalist Physicians and the Rehabilitation team.
  • Advanced technology, including a state-of-the-art Medical Imaging center, to rapidly identify strokes and problems with blood vessels in the brain.

  • Educational outreach services and Stroke Recovery Support group.

“Our commitment to excellence in the care and treatment of acute stroke is another step in our expansion of evidence-based medicine, supporting technologies, systems, and staff expertise,” says Kurt Gensert, PVMC’s Vice President of Operations. “We know that access to this kind of local, community-based specialty care is vital to Brighton and the surrounding region’s health and well-being.”

“Our goal is to develop a center of excellence for stroke patients that meets and exceeds national stroke measures,” explains PVMC Neurologist and Stroke Director Rai Kakkar, M.D. If you have stroke symptoms, call 911 immediately.
